Speeding tickets in Massachusetts can be
cost you a lot
depending
on the circumstances. In addition to fines
and penalties imposed by the Court, your insurance
rates may go up and this is usually the thing most people worry about.
Massachusetts has an unusual "point" system. In most states you start
with
zero points. Tickets give you points, and the more points, the worse
off
you are. But in Massachusetts, you start at 15, and if you don't get
have
any tickets or other problems, your number goes down, to a minimum of
9.
Having a lower number means lower insurance rates. Speeding tickets
usually
add two points. Accidents and drunk driving can add more.
Traffic matters in MA are handled by Massachusetts Traffic Courts.
For NY
drivers, New York does not
recognize most out-of-state tickets (except, strangely, from Ontario
and
Quebec). On the other hand, many states do recognize out-of-state
tickets, and
they do affect insurance. New Jersey, for example, recognizes all
out-of-state moving violations as 2 points.
